Although the Sarsanghchalak (chief) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) makes a public speech on every Vijaya Dashami Day, in recent years his utterances are being analysed with great interest. That’s not surprising considering that the RSS stands at the apex of the Sangh parivar of which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a part. Rightly or not, analysts look for some policy guidance

In 1974, I was in my final year in school in New Delhi and I remember this incident clearly. On May 4, the lead editorial in the newspaper that came to our home was on The Siege of Seringapatam. The editorial extolled the virtues of Tipu Sultan whose 175th death anniversary it was on that day. The piece left a deep impact on my mind: here was this short, determined man who as ruler of Mysore would

In a few days from now, on August 15, India will complete 70 years of Independence. There will be celebrations and public functions and paeans will be sung in praise of those who supposedly brought us freedom. But the history books have been written by those who came to power in 1947 and regretfully the role of many important players has been virtually omitted. Prime among these are the names of N
