Taking back to good ol’ cinema

The dust over ‘Why Kattappa Killed Baahubali?’ has settled. We are now clear that ‘Baahubali’ will probably be the blockbuster to beat for years to come. SS Rajamouli's magnum opus had captured the minds of Indians and Indian media like no other cinema in the last 30 odd years.

Most genres in cinema have a limited scope -- Revenge, comedy, romance, and realistic cinema. Those, who repeatedly, delve in these genres as writers or directors will tell you how difficult it is to deliver quality and refreshing cinema time and again. The narrowest of them, in fact, is horror.

All the limelight is on ‘Baahubali’ and rightly so. The movie is all about how you present a well-thought content with conviction and audience will arrive in droves. Today, however, I wish to focus on a movie that had an equal amount of conviction and sincerity in its presentation yet it did not get the kind of attention it deserved both at the box office and to an extent in the media.

There are times when you want to write so much and words fail you. Today is one such day. The feeling that Vinod Khanna is no more will take some time to sink in. I was a Vinod Khanna worshipper. I will always remain one.

While doing a small random fact search I stumbled upon a simple fact. The cost of making of both ‘Naam Shabana’ and ‘Begum Jaan’ is almost the same i.e. 15 crore. If you were to compare; ‘Naam Shabana’ features a not so big star Taapsee Pannu and ‘Begum Jaan’ had the presence of the phenomenal screen star Vidya Balan and backing of the Bhatt camp.

Aa Gaya Hero’, the latest Govinda movie came and became ‘Chala Gaya Hero’ even before you could say Friday. If you were a teenager or a college-going cool kid or an office going young professional in the 1990s in India, chances are you were also a Govinda fan. No one ruled the fun film genre like this pocket dictionary sized dynamite.

2017, barring a ‘Kaabil’ or a ‘Ghazi Attack’, has been mostly content wise disappointing. That is where April suddenly makes you feel exited. When you look at some of the releases that are mentioned below, it cannot get any bigger than this. Interestingly, it does not get any subtle too. Here are some movies that should make you probably count seconds to their release dates.

Quick… I will ask you a simple question. How many of you have seen this epic series by Rajkumar Hirani called ‘Munnabhai’. If you are a Bollywood buff then chances are that you may have watched it more than once. If I were to ask you; do you like Circuit as much Munna then again the answer will probably be yes.

Call me the typical Bollywood fan guy, but I had better hopes from ‘Commando 2’.  In fact, not just ‘Commando 2’, when 2017 had started I had great expectations from Bollywood. The first quarter promised heavy duty names and some great banners coming out with long anticipated movies. All that has crashed and how! So far it has been a year of, politely, put disappointments.  Let’s take a few cases.

Sometimes the greatest enemy of a child is a doting parent. So blind in love and affection they ensure the child grows up wrong. Sometimes to the extent of being an individual who just cannot see his own faults and rectify himself. Bollywood, today, is facing the same problem. Our film stars have fans.

If Bollywood has used one festival to create remarkable situations and dramatic moments to its fullest capacity, and continues to do so with aplomb, then it is undoubtedly the festival of colours. Holi is not just beautiful when recreated on the silver screen, the epic scenes and nerve-wrecking twists woven around it have remained etched in the memories of film aficionados. You name the genre - co

In a span of two Fridays, the audience has delivered a simple lesson yet again for Bollywood. In an interesting sequence of Friday releases of first ‘The Ghazi Attack’ and then ‘Rangoon’, the two movies have different plot lines and genre. One is a period film focusing on love and the other is a complete one-dimensional war thriller.

The recent ‘Padmavati’ controversy had people divided across lines, as usual. However, it set me thinking on something else totally, unconnected with that unwanted controversy. Indian cinema over the years has made some great period films when you judge them purely from the entertainment point of view.

Bollywood has its limitations. The biggest of them is that largely it needs to show politically correct content, which does not hurt the sensitivity, read ego of anyone. Then you add the recent evil of promotions, huge production costs due to inflates superstar salaries, large screen number releases and you see that the aversion to doing something new and different becomes more necessary for the p

A lot of us are yet to recover from the high voltage clash of ‘Raees’ Vs ‘Kaabil’ on January 25. That war of supremacy is still on and the final verdict will come later.

The hyped up epic battle of Kaabil VS Raees is still on. And the box office results are unfolding. The two things you should never predict. Which way the Indian voter and Indian audience will go. Yet I shall as a movie buff and in my opinion, ‘Kaabil’ is winning this battle.

2016 ended on a high note with ‘Dangal’ and 2017 promises to be even bigger. As a Bollywood buff, you can twiddle your thumbs in anticipation because 2017 is lined up with exciting movies one after the other. At the cost of sounding totally clichéd, 2017 is probably going to be one of Bollywood’s biggest years in terms of the genre of movies that are in the pipeline and the box office numbers they

Of late we are noticing the tussle between filmmakers of ‘Shivaay’ and ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. Thanks to the scuffle both the movies got huge publicity and I doubt if both producers need to spend a single dime on promotions after that.

It was, I think, the Star Screen Awards of 1991 and Kabir Bedi was the presenter. That year Kamlesh Pandey had won the best dialogue awards for the iconic lines that he wrote for Rajkumar in ‘Saudagar’ – “Hum tumhein marenge aur zaroor marenge.”

If you are a Hindi cinema buff like me, then probably, like me, you are also counting hours to August 12. In my case, a baggage of history excites me and also a prophecy that I would like to make. This weekend of August 12 could change the way our movies releases have worked in recent years. Let me talk about all this one by one.

Besides the lovely voluptuous ladies of the 70s and 80s; the heavy duty dialogues and great actor clashes, there is something else which has never failed to awe me and that is the unbelievable but extraordinary scenes in Indian cinema. Here are some of those scenes that will make you laugh or go WTF as the slang goes but trust me they created cat calls and whistles.

The long awaited film ‘Jungle Book’ has finally arrived. And I am sure that we all are going to love it in India. So in a lighter vein what would have happened if some of our A lister and B lister filmmakers had attempted ‘Jungle Book’ in India. Manmohan Desai – Sher Khan is the tyrant zamindar lion of the village before Mowgli’s father raises his voice against him.
