Vijayawada/Mumbai: The Mumbai police unraveled the mystery surrounding the brutal murder of 23-year-old software engineer Singavarapu Esther Anuhya, after arresting five persons, including a cab driver.

The initial probe revealed that the driver had diverted the vehicle from Mumbai Railway Station after Anuhya had got in. He took the help of four friends, including two cab drivers.

The five kept Anuhya in a locked house for five days and raped her continuously. They killed her and set the body on fire using acid, the Mumbai police said. A resident of Machilipatnam, the victim was missing since January 5. The body was found by her father Jonathan Prasad on January 16 in a decomposed state.

He alleged that the Mumbai police had failed to act on his complaint, leading to the killing of his daughter. Anuhya had left for Mumbai on January 4 from Vijayawada railway station and her whereabouts were not known from the next morning. Prasad had lodged a complaint with the Vijayawada Railway Police on the same day and forwarded a copy to the Mumbai police. He accused the Mumbai police of not acting on his complaint, forcing him to search for Anuhya on his own.

The railway police here said Anuhya had boarded a cab at the Mumbai railway station from where she went missing. They revealed that she had a second mobile, which was active till January 9.

Meanwhile, Prasad alleged at a press conference in Machilipatnam on Tuesday that media reports on Anuhya’s murder were misleading. He claimed that the bed-sheet said to have been found by the Mumbai police near the body and her slippers did not belong to his daughter.

Prasad said the police had e-mailed the bed-sheet photo to him. The footwear was sent by police to her room-mate. He expressed distress at the slow pace of the investigation, alleging that the police were yet to secure his wife’s DNA. His DNA was taken in Mumbai itself.
