Will autos go by meter reading after fare hike, ask passengers , Auto Drivers Union, Auto fares. There are times when they agree on the meter fare but after reaching the destination they insist on an extra Rs 10-20.

Hyderabad: Even as the Auto Drivers Union JAC met Transport Commissioner Ananth Ramu on Wednesday to remind him of the decisions taken on the revision of auto fares, citizens are wary that auto drivers would still charge extra even after the hike. Mridula, a software professional, says, “During daytime too, the auto drivers ask for Rs 15-20 extra. Even in the past when there was a hike in the minimum fare the drivers did not stop asking for extra money.”

While in other cities people first step into an auto and then tell the driver the destination, in Hyderabad it is the other way round, she says. Sandhya, a medical transcriptionist with Rapid Insys, says, “Asking for extra money in spite of the meter reading is ingrained in the psyche of auto drivers.

There are times when they agree on the meter fare but after reaching the destination they insist on an extra Rs 10-20.

The government should come out with a stringent law in curbing this menace.”

Call for prepaid stands

Blessy Thomas, a resident of Kukatpally who has been travelling in autos for years, asks, “What is the guarantee that the drivers will not charge extra even after the rise. The government should set up prepaid stands at different locations. I met with an accident 14 years ago and ever since I have been dependent on auto rickshaws. But with the minimum fare being raised to Rs 20, I have to think twice now.’’ There is a prepaid stand at the Secunderabad Railway station. People especially working in the IT sector complain of harassment. Richa, a software engineer and who travels from Begumpet to Madhapur, says, “The auto drivers just charge whatever they want.

If there were prepaid stands at strategic places, especially where offices are located it would be helpful.”

A Sathi Reddy, general secretary of AP Auto Drivers Samakhya, agrees that auto drivers charge extra but feels that now after the hike in minimum fare drivers would not charge extra. A few drivers are bringing a bad name to auto drivers.
