TPCC President Ponnala Lakshmaiah: ‘KCR Can’t Take Credit for Telangana’ Hyderabad: Alleging that the TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao never raised his voice in Lok Sabha on the problems of Telangana and the martyrs who sacrificed their life for separate State, the TPCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah said that KCR was trying to rake up passions for the sake of votes. Speaking at meet-the-press programme organised by Telangana English Journalists Association here on Sunday, Ponnala said that of late KCR has been leveling all kinds of allegations against him. If KCR had been given a ministerial post during Chandrababu Naidu’s tenure, he would never have raked up the issue of Telangana, he criticised. Ponnala said that Rao, who claims to have faced all kinds of problems during the T struggle, was at his farm house during the Million March and Sakalajanula Samme (General strike). “He is a liar and has never stood by his word.

All the talk of projecting a Dalit as the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh was merely a hogwash,” Ponnala said. Referring to the T struggle, the former minister said it dated back to over six decades. “Today, various parties are claiming and want to take credit for the creation of Telangana state. Students, lawyers, farmers, women, doctors, engineers and others in the society fought for a separate Telangana. It is not just one person but four crore peoples’ aspiration that has come to fruition,” he said. Reflecting on the T sentiment, he went down memory lane: “In 1955 as a student in the 4th class we walked out of the classroom in protest against Visalandhra. The struggle for Telangana was always prevalent, whether it was in 1969, 1972 or afterwards.”

Emphasising on the Congress Party’s commitment he said that the party had first included the separation of Telangana in its manifesto. In 2002, 42 MLAs urged Sonia Gandhi to include the statehood to Telangana. To a query on developing the region if the Congress were to come to power, he said that it had a 5-point agenda: stable government, good governance, social participation, self-respect and a Bangaru Telangana.
