Hyderabad: In a significant development that would ease power shortage in Telangana, the state government is drawing up plans to set up a mega solar farm with a generation capacity of 1,000 MW in Mahabubnagar district. Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TIIC) is likely to join hands with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for establishing the farm on 6,000 acre.

"We have already identified the requisite land for project which is still in the preliminary stages of planning. However, we are in touch with SECI to take the project forward,” K Pradeep Chandra, Special Chief Secretary and commissioner of industrial promotion, industries and commerce department, Telangana Government, told media persons here on Friday after inaugurating PaperTech 2014, a two-day conference on paper and pulp industry, organised by CII and IPMA.

He said that Telangana would offer huge growth opportunities in clean technologies, waste water treatment and recycling. “The scope is very large. The Telangana government is keen on facilitating economic growth and creating more jobs while supporting its mission of inclusive, sustainable growth and development,” he said.
Pradeep Chandra further said that Indian pulp and paper sector had addressed well the challenges of growing energy and water consumption by adopting green practices. “The sector through its pro-active measures has significantly reduced the effluent discharge,” he maintained.

K S Kasi Viswanathan, Chairman of PaperTech 2014 and Managing Director, Seshasayee Paper & Boards, said the event was aimed at improving performance of pulp and paper and moving towards world class standards. “Promoting energy efficiency, water and waste management, renewable energy technologies are some of the focus areas of the event,” he added. According to him, the key challenges facing the sector are environmental regulations, energy audits, resource availability and their quality. He urged the participating companies convert the challenges into new opportunities.
