According to The Express Tribune, 2014 revision of the United Nations' (UN) World Urbanisation Prospects report showed that New Delhi, with a total population of 25 million, is most likely to retain the second spot on the list till 2030. By the time, the metro city's population is expected to reach 36 million.
The survey also revealed that almost 54 percent of the world's total population lives in urban areas today and is expected to grow to 66 percent by 2050. The survey was conducted by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Asia and Africa on the other hand, have emerged as the abode of world's largest rural population with the figures pegging at 90 percent. However, the report also added that about 56 percent of the population in Africa and 64 percent in Asia are expected to be living in urban areas by 2050.
