The united Andhra Pradesh witnessed an exodus of students to other states during the Telangana movement last year. This trend is still continuing. Thanks to the impasse by Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments over conducting counselling and fee reimbursement issue. A large number of students are not taking chances and moving to neighbouring states.
According to a senior official of Board of Intermediate Education (BIE), a total of 13,000 students have already taken migration certificates from the board while 25,000 students have applied for certificates which would be issued in a short time.
There are 760 engineering colleges in both the states. Adding to the existing colleges, 18 new colleges were approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), taking the total number of seats to nearly 3.5 lakh. Last year around 1.5 lakh seats were left vacant after all rounds of counselling. This year 1.5 lakh seats are expected to be filled, while two lakh seats might end up vacant, said a senior official of Higher Education.
This year, the number of students opting for other states for pursing their higher education has considerably increased, said a member of private management association consortium, Telangana.
This year, over 2.5 lakh students appeared for the engineering entrance test from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, of which, about 20,000 students from both states already applied for admissions and a few have joined Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and SRM University in Tamil Nadu and other colleges in Maharashtra. “Last year the Telangana agitation delayed counselling and this year it’s the fee reimbursement issue. Although Hyderabad is the hub for top engineering colleges in the State, I cannot take a chance with my career. So I opted for SRM University,” said Pavan Kumar, a student. It’s worth mentioning here that the admission process remains same in both the states according to the AP Reorginisation Act. The number of colleges put together in both the states outnumber the rest across the country. The Supreme Court in its ruling ordered AP and Telangana governments to commence the engineering classes from August 1. Given the situation in the State, classes may not commence from August 1.
