Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police on Tuesday prohibited consumption of liquor in public places for a week (July 23 to 29, both days included), and may extend it further.

City Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy stated in a press release that rampant consuming of liquor in public places had been going on unhindered in several parts of the city. It had become a nuisance to general public and was creating problems to women and children.

Drinking liquor openly restricted free movement of citizens, especially women, on the streets. It also posed threat to public safety and security of citizens, the release noted.

In order to curb this public drinking menace and instill fear among alcoholics, the Commissioner issued the order prohibiting consumption of liquor in public places under Section 144 of IPC. Those who violate the order would be booked under Section 188 of the IPC, added the release.
