The widow of Justice Ashok Kumar, Ebi Ashok Kumar, has asked how anybody can talk ill about a person who died many years ago and is not there to defend his \"honour\".
The family of the judge in question against whom Press Council of India Chairman Justice Markandey Katju has levelled allegations has expressed dismay over it, saying in our culture, "we never talk ill of the dead".
The widow of Justice Ashok Kumar, Ebi Ashok Kumar, has asked how anybody can talk ill about a person who died many years ago and is not there to defend his "honour".
"I'm pained," the widow of Justice Kumar, who died in 2005, told a national daily.
Meanwhile, former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee has said that Katju, by questioning the former Chief Justices, is lowering the institutions. Sorabjee wonders why Katju has spoken out now when the judge in question had passed away so many years ago.
Eminent jurist Fali Nariman said the outburst by Katju was "unbecoming" of a dignitary who was once a judge of the Supreme Court.
He, however, said Katju's remarks are "not untimely". The matter has now entered the public domain and let the responses of the three retired Chief Justices be clear and unambiguous, Nariman said, and asked did they or did they not buckle under pressure.
DMK chief M. Karunanidhi has also come down heavily on Katju, charging him with making allegations due to "some hidden pressure" and sought to know why he had remained quiet so long.
The NDA government has pointed to role of the previous UPA regime in the controversial extension to a Madras High Court judge and pitched for "improving" the system of judges' appointment as the issue has rocked parliament and PCI chairman Markandey Katju, who had raised the allegations, posed questions to former CJI R.C. Lahoti on the matter. The Lok Sabha has been disrupted by AIADMK members over the allegations by Justice Katju, a former chief justice of the Madras High Court and later an apex court judge, that an additional judge in the high court got an extension due to political pressure despite charges against him.
