How safe are the school children? How can a tractor driver be employed as a school bus driver? etc are the questions that would pop up from our minds after the horrendous accident that claimed the lives of innocent children. However, this is not the first incident that got our attention. Many such accidents involving untrained drivers, putting the lives of children to danger, have also occurred in the past. According to traffic police personnel, in order to save few bucks, the errant schools hire untrained drivers, who lack traffic knowledge and thereby contribute to the increasing number of accidents involving schoolchildren. The institutions of parent-teacher associations are also not strong in the State and as a result the parents also do not put any pressure on the school management to ensure that they hire well-trained drivers, he lamented.
Schoolchildren are not at all safe in almost all the cases largely because driving a school bus is a part-time and a low-paid job. Moreover, the hiring and training of the bus drivers remain as the least priorities of the school managements. “School bus drivers need to exercise utmost care at all times while driving, especially when they have kids on board. They must travel at or below the speed limit restrictions and at a velocity that is safe for weather and road conditions. They must always be sober, obey all driver safety rules and refrain from distractions such as texting, talking on cell phone or listening to music,” said a senior traffic police personnel.
Mere putting up stickers like “How am I driving?” and “If you find the bus driving rashly, please call or complain XXX” does not make any sense unless and until steering is handled properly by drivers.
The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) also issued suo moto notices to the school management, said SCPCR member Achyutha Rao.
