Both the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana recorded low rainfall in this season. Though the Kharif season is already halfway through, there has not been much progress in agricultural operations in the both states.Nine districts in Andhra Pradesh have witnessed deficit rainfall of about 41 per cent and sowing has not begun in 3.82 lakh hectares. Though there have been occasional rains, they are not enough to take up agricultural activities in full swing.

The situation in Telangana too is not different. Here the rainfall deficit is said to be by about 50 per cent. The coverage of food grains in TS is said to be a little less than 80,000 hectares which is about one third of the normal sowing area. The water levels in Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar are at dead storage level. Only Somasila and Lower Maniar are having water levels higher than last year. The TS government sources said it was yet to come up with a contingency plan.
