A deceptive message has been circulating on social media and whatsapp stating that a M-tech student of NIT Suratkal has died due to the Ebola virus. While the pranksters were clearly trying to create panic, this message has been deemed a hoax. They also tried to spread inaccurate information about ways to stay safe from the virus; information that can do much more harm than good.

Nodal officer at Gandhi Hospital Dr.Narsimalu K brushed off the rumours and said, “These are all rumours. All the nodal officers of South India are coordinating with each other and in case of any confirmed case, we will intimate all the states.”
Furthermore the doctor added that a Nigerian national who was infected with the disease, was on his way to Hyderabad for cancer treatment but airport authorities in Abu Dhabi intercepted and isolated him as he was suffering from Ebola. He died in Abu Dhabi due to the virus.
While, the motive of the tricksters is unknown, it sure seems like they wanted to create panic and fear. Dr S. Ramakrishna said “People must follow hand-washing hygiene very strictly.”
