About the movie

KATIYABAAZ is the story of electricity theft in Kanpur told through the eyes of two protagonists: Loha Singh, a katiyabaaz and Ritu Maheshwari, an IAS officer. It tells the story of the electricity crisis in small town India. It premiered at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival and has traveled to 50 festivals across all continents. It was awarded the National Film Award and Best Indian Film award at Mumbai Film Festival last year.

Plot: In Kanpur, India, an electricity thief provides Robin Hood style services to the poor in the face of day long power-cuts. Meanwhile the first female chief of the local electricity supply company has vowed to put an end to all illegal connections, for good. In a summer of crisis, both come to terms with India's energy poverty.

The film highlights the issues faced by the city of Kanpur due to power cuts and failures from the perspective of Loha Singh, a local katiyabaaz who, with an almost vigilante like attitude, steals electricity for the locals of the town.

  • It is the winner of the National Award for the Best Investigative film at the 61st National Awards, and the winner of India Gold for best film at the Mumbai Film Festival, 2013.
