New Delhi: Asserting that all reports about his family seeking political favours were baseless, an upset Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that he will quit politics if these charges are proved.

"For the last fifteen to twenty days, there have been baseless rumours circulating. I thought I should not bother with it because rumours have no basis and they will die soon, but I have seen that the rumours are just growing. I want to assure the nation that the day any charges are proved against me or any member of my family, I will quit politics the very same day," Singh told.

Reports surfaced that Singh is upset with some of his colleagues, who were allegedly spreading stories about his son Pankaj Singh.

It was reported that Singh is quite miffed with reports doing the round that PM Narendra Modi denied an election ticket to his son from Noida for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh bypolls for unsavoury political conduct. The BJP has picked a 62-year-old woman entrepreneur, Vimla Batham, as its candidate.

The Home Minister said, “I have spoken to the Prime Minister and BJP president Amit Shah on the issue and they have expressed shock.”

Presently, Pankaj Singh is a General Secretary of the BJP's Uttar Pradesh branch.

The Prime Minister's Office rubbished the reports, saying the reports are completely baseless & malicious.

PMO said in a statement that the reports are plain lies, motivated and constitute a malicious attempt at character assassination and tarnishing government's image.

PMO statement:

This has reference to reports appearing in a section of the media over the past several weeks, mentioning the Prime Minister, and referring to the conduct of some Union Ministers, and alleged misconduct of the Home Minister's son.

The reports are plain lies, motivated and constitute a malicious attempt at character assassination and tarnishing the image of the Government.

Those indulging in such rumour-mongering are damaging the interest of the nation.

These reports are strongly denied.
