Hyderabad: A keen contest is on the cards in the September 13 by-election to the prestigious Medak Lok Sabha constituency in Telangana as the ruling TRS, Congress, and TDP-BJP alliance candidates filed their nominations on Wednesday.

The BJP-TDP which did not announce its candidate till the last moment sprang a surprise by fielding former Congress MLA from Sangareddy T Jayaprakash Reddy as its candidate. The Congress has put up former minister Sunitha Laxma Reddy while TRS has fielded K Prabhakar Reddy.

The BJP zeroed in on Jayaprakash Reddy, popularly known as Jagga Reddy, as he is known for his vitriolic attack against TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao even when the movement for separate Telangana was at its peak. Reddy is a popular leader in Sangareddy.

It is said that the film actor turned politician Pawan Kalyan also played a crucial role in the selection of Jagga Reddy. Pawan is learnt to have recommended the name of Jagga Reddy to BJP national president Amit Shah during his recent visit to Hyderabad. After discussing the issue with state leaders, Amit Shah had put up the proposal before the BJP's Central Election Committee on Wednesday morning and his name was cleared. Pawan Kalyan is also likely to campaign for Jayaprakash Reddy. Jagga Reddy had started his political career as an RSS worker at a young age and was also associated with ABVP, the student’s wing of the BJP for long before he quit the party. He was elected to the state Assembly on TRS ticket in 2004 but later he switched over to Congress party in 2007.

The BJP which had taken the by-poll seriously wanted to prove that it was the only alternative to TRS in the state of Telangana.
