Hyderabad: Rain battered roads in Hyderabad and negligent driving by a DCM van driver claimed the life of an Intermediate I year student when she was run over by the van near Sharada Devi Hospital in AS Rao Nagar under Neredmet police station limits on Monday evening.

The victim was identified as Swethanjali, 17, daughter of Babu Rao of Shiva Sai Nagar. She was pursuing Intermediate I year at Toppers Junior College at AS Rao Nagar.

On Monday evening, after college hours, Swethanjali and her classmate Manisha, 15, who was riding pillion, were driving towards Neredmet when the mishap occurred around 5 pm while they were returning home on a Honda Activa scooter. At the pothole-filled stretch near Sharada Devi Hospital, Swethanjali who was driving the two-wheeler, lost control after the front tyre landed in a pothole and she was run over by the DCM van (AP 28 TA 727) which was just behind her. The two girls fell on the road. While Manisha, fell on the safer side of the road and suffered injuries, Swethanjali came under the wheels," Neredmet inspector N Chandra Babu said adding that death was instant for Swethanjali while Manisha was rushed to Sharada Devi Hospital by locals.

Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's family members, police registered a case under sections 304-A (Causing death due to rash or negligent act) and 337 (Causing injuries due to rash or negligent act) of the IPC against the Khandelwal Ceramics Private Limited bus driver. The driver has been taken into custody, but police refused to divulge his details. On interrogation, the DCM driver reportedly told the police that he did not hit the two-wheeler at all and the girls fell on the road after their vehicle's tyre stuck in a pothole. However, police suspect that the accident was the result of bad roads and negligent driving of the DCM driver.
