Liquor for votes: TD tries to corner YSRCP, Replying to a question, Minister for Excise K Ravindra said out of the 32 cases that were handed over to the CID, it was found that YSRCP men were involved in most of them.

Hyderabad: In a strategic move, the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Monday tried to pin down the YSR Congress Party by raising a question in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on a case relating to the distribution of liquor for votes during the recent elections and on the progress of the CID probe into it.

Replying to a question, Minister for Excise K Ravindra said out of the 32 cases that were handed over to the CID, it was found that YSRCP men were involved in most of them.

The Minister said that in Guntur, Nellore and Ongole, several men who were arrested for possessing huge cache of liquor belonged to the YSRCP. Also, well-known leaders like Kavali MLA Ramireddy Pratap Kumar Reddy and Ponnur party candidate Ravi Venkataramana were among the top YSRCP leaders who were involved in liquor for vote deal, the Minister said, adding that the kingpin of the smuggling gang, Nirmal Kumar Appu, whose name had figured in the case, was still at large. The Minister said some of the Congress members were also booked in the case.

The Minister was replying to the allegations of TDP MLA D Narendra Kumar that during the elections the YSRCP men distributed liquor in almost six to seven districts. Narendra Kumar demanded that the government form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and conduct a high-level inquiry so that the real kingpins behind it could be brought to book.

Responding to the allegations, Jyotula Nehru of YSRCP challenged the ruling party for a debate in the Assembly over the issue. He also dared the TDP government to implement NT Rama Rao's promise of 'total prohibition of liquor' in the State, if it was serious about health of citizens.
