About 80 lakh people in the city consume 20 lakh litres of milk every day. Sadly many people have been unwittingly consuming milk that is not only adulterated, but also that contains harmful elements. The quality of milk is so poor in some cases that its regular consumption could affect the digestive system and kidneys. Many dairy milk centre owners are infusing Oxytocin among the cattle to increase milk production. When consumed, this milk could even lead to cancer. The authorities are aware of the racket but they have failed to nab the culprits who play with the lives of the citizens

In 2013, popular milk brands in the city were branded unsafe and sub-standard in a study done by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Pure milk should not contain bacteria beyond permissible limits, but the study showed that milk contained bacteria far in excess of the permissible limits. This was because the milk was adulterated and bacteria entered through water.

The study also revealed that the brands contained harmful bacteria such as E-Coli and salmonella, apart from urea, which is a deadly bacteria that harms eyes, brain, digestive system and gynecomastia.

This year, milk producers are back in focus and quality of their products has again been in doubt. The Telangana State Drug Control Administration (TSDCA) has increased its vigil and is focussing on dairy milk centre owners to put a tab on oxytocin smugglers in the state. Oxytocin injection is given to cows and buffaloes to increase milk production.

This milk, when consumed, affects eyesight, leads to fatigue, hormonal changes and also causes cancer. With the recent incident coming to light that smugglers are illegally supplying banned oxytocin drug to dairy farm owners and vegetable farmers, the drug control administration in the state has increased its vigil and laid a trap to arrest the culprits. But even after three months, the DCA officials have failed to nab the real culprits. Only one individual named Mohammed Nazir was nabbed by the authorities who had seized 100 vials of 30ml oxytocin drug from the culprit.

According to officials, the smugglers are from Bihar and their network is widespread. “The illegal selling of the banned drug is going on clandestinely in the state. As chemists are not allowed to stock oxytocin, these people have built their own network to sell this drug in the state,” informed an official. When questioned on why the drug peddlers couldn’t be traced to contain this menace, the officials informed that there was no label on the vials. Because of this, they were not able to track the manufacturers.

“The only way to track these smugglers is to put a focused vigil on the dairy farm owners as they have developed a direct link with the smugglers,” informed the official.
