Hyderabad: Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are leaving no stone unturned to get the maximum benefits out of the Union government’s ambitious plan to develop 100 ‘Smart Cities’ across the country. Apparently, the Centre’s decision to develop these cities has come as big boost for the newly created Telangana and the successor state of AP in promoting urbanisation in a fast pace. While the AP government has already submitted proposals urging to include all major towns in the scheme, the TS government is making all out efforts to get all district headquarters and municipal corporations under the project.

The Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department has proposed to promote seven district headquarters (Nalgonda, Mahbubnagar, Khammam, Warangal, Adilabad, Medak and Karimangar) and three municipal corporations - Khammam, Nizamabad and Ramagundam - as the smart cities under the centrally sponsored scheme.

According to official sources, the proposal has emphasised on the necessity of improving basic infrastructure and detailed the need to upgrade technologically all the district headquarters and municipal corporations which already have become a hub of engineering and other technology-related study centres. The availability of advanced technology and improvement of basic amenities would help promote the cities as a centre of employment generation. It will, in turn, help to curtail migration of educated youth to the State capital in search of jobs.

In a recent review meeting with the Municipal Commissioners and District Collectors, the MA&UD Director B Janardhan Reddy enquired about the present status of the development of the urban local bodies and the prospects of further development of the towns.

The officials said a report would be submitted to the Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in a week before forwarding the same to the Union Ministry for Urban Development. It is learnt that KCR already spoke to the Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and requested to allocate more smart city projects to TS.
