Hyderabad Police to be the first in the country to use sophisticated technology Cops will use internet enabled martphones and body cameras Action will be taken against offenders within minutes

Very recently, the city police got a shot in the arm with brand new Innova cars and CBZ Extreme bikes. Well, that was just the tip of the iceberg. The traffic police is now all set to up its tech-savvy quotient as cops will now be equipped with internet enabled android phones. Not just that, the personnel will be provided with body cameras. This is the first time in the country that cops will be using sophisticated technology to manage traffic and to take action against offenders. The cops already had a taste of digitisation when they started using cameras at traffic signals in 2010.
Timely action is the main motive behind this initiative as stringent measures will be taken against violators.
“A photo of the commuter who violates traffic rules would be clicked on the phone and details such as the vehicle owner’s name, address and photo would be pulled up instantly. The place of traffic violation and the time would be updated later. In case the offender escapes, his/her details would be forwarded to the traffic cops at the next signal. For example, if the offender was spotted at Ameerpet and had escaped towards Khairatabad, his details would be forwarded to the traffic cops at Khairatabad,” explained one of the cops.
Challans would be issued within moments of noticing the offender and would be duly forwarded to the concerned address. This system will effectively end the current discrepancies in penalising offenders.
“Presently, the RTA database doesn’t have detailed information about the vehicle owner. So we started using Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) machines, where instead of issuing e-challans, the offender could pay the penalty on the spot. However, there aren’t many machines available in the city and only a few personnel have been using it. The mobile phones will eliminate such shortcomings,” added the police officer.
