BJP, CPI call on CM for official declaration

Hyderabad: Buckling under political pressure, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is understood to have decided against declaring Telangana Liberation Day on September 17 as an official function.

Though the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders stepped up their demand to celebrate the Telangana Liberation Day on September 17 officially and called on Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday, the latter did not respond to their requests.

While the BJP is keen that September 17 should be officially celebrated as Telangana liberation day as the Indian army had moved into the Hyderabad state on September 13, 1948, following instructions from the then Deputy Prime Minister, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, and took over the administration on September 17, Chief Minister KCR who had an alliance with the AIMIM Party and was eyeing to win the GHMC elections with its support would not like to antagonise the alliance partner.

The MIM party has always opposed to the move of celebrating the occasion for the party believes strongly that the erstwhile Hyderabad state was forcibly merged with India. The MIM used to observe September 17 as Black Day every year. By celebrating the merger of Telangana in Indian Union, the State government would be paying rich tributes and condemning the brutal Nizam rule.

But the BJP and other opposition parties including the CPI say, “Telangana people suffered in the hands of Nizam’s tyrannical army of Razakars. The true liberation of Telangana was achieved when it merged with the Indian Union. The moment is historic and should be celebrated.”

The Telangana BJP state president G Kishen Reddy and floor leader K Laxman told the media that KCR during Telangana movement had asked party workers to hoist national flags at every village on September 17. After Telangana has become a reality KCR had gone back on his word.

Criticising KCR for refusing to celebrate the day officially, CPI district secretary T Srinivas Rao said the TRS had exploited the people of Telangana and their sentiments. State governments in Maharashtra and Karnakata have been celebrating the event as a State function and same should be followed in Telangana which played a crucial role in the struggle against Nizams. But for political mileage and to appease the Muslims, the Chief Minister has been ignoring the event,” he added.

“Even KCR is afraid of communal fanatics organising Telangana Merger Day on September 17 officially,” CPI leader K Narayana said. He lamented that the Telangana Armed Struggle failing to get recognition even after achieving statehood to Telangana was painful.
