“We need to develop a holistic model to address the preventive needs as well as disease specific requirement incidences of flourosis borne problems,” said the doctor.

To take up this preventive activity on a big scale, Dr Gowd requested a helping hand from the FDI. More than 10,000 dental surgeons from 138 countries of the globe attended the FDI Annual World Dental Congress 2014 in Greater Noida, New Delhi.

In India, oral health is a critical but overlooked component of overall health and well-being among children and adults. Problems such as dental caries, periodontitis and oral cancer are some serious concerns that are significantly diminishing the quality of life for people, especially those from low-income groups.

Periodontal disease affects 90-95 per cent of the population, and dental caries affects 60-80 per cent of children in India. Oral cancer accounts for almost 40 per cent of the total diagnosed cancer cases in India—considered to be one of the highest rates in the world. There is a need to bring down the incidence of oral and dental diseases to less than 40 per cent of existing levels and the vision of the FDI is to improve oral health quality for all.

Dr MS Gowd, talking about global changes, spread of advanced technology, awareness on dental sciences and new challenges said, “We should focus on healthy smiles on every one’s face, specially children.
