Mumbai Indians eliminated, The title triumph was glorious dubbed as a fitting retirement tribute to their mentor, Sachin Tendulkar.

Raipur: The ‘mighty’ Mumbai Indians achieved a dubious distinction here on Tuesday. From being the champion to not getting qualified for the main draw in the next edition, MI hit a new low in its cricketing history, which is ridden with more lows and few highs.

The title triumph was glorious dubbed as a fitting retirement tribute to their mentor, Sachin Tendulkar.

However, nothing could bring alive the magic as they came a cropper against a marked weak but overly determined Northern Knights.

In fact, the Kieron Pollard-led outfit lost the match in the very first session having posted a mere 132 for the loss of nine wickets.

The Knights made more than a match and accomplished the target with six wickets and 14 balls to spare. In doing so, they also did a huge favour to Lahore Lions which made it to the main draw.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians batting floundered yet again as the high-profile franchise could manage only 132 for nine in their 'do-or-die' final qualifying game.

Save Pollard, making his debut as captain, who scored 31 off 24 balls, none of the Mumbai Indians batsmen displayed enough firepower against a disciplined Northern bowling attack which used the sluggish pitch to good effect.

It was young Shreyas Gopal, who smashed 24 off 12 balls, who took MI past 130-run mark. While 39-year-old Scott Styris (3/21) had the best figures among the bowlers, it was Tim Southee (3/24), who was both deadly and economical in his first three overs before Gopal took him for 15 in the last over.

At the start, Mike Hussey (7) got impatient as he tried to give Southee the charge in the fourth over of the innings but couldn't get the required elevation as Scott Kuggeleijn took a diving catch at mid-on.

Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians: 132 for 9 (Kieron Pollard 31, Shreyas Gopal 24, Lasith Malinga 20; Scott Styris 3/21, Tim Southee 3/24); Northern Knights: 133 for 4 (Kane Williamson 53, Anton Devcich 39; J Bumrah 2/26).
