Peddapuram (East Godavari): Police here on Tuesday evening arrested four persons while they were allegedly transporting a Panchaloha idol. The involvement of eight others, including four policemen, was also under scanner in this connection.

On a tip off that a 14-kilogram Panchaloha idol, worth of Rs 3 crore was stolen from Narayanapuram under Parlakimidi district in Odisha, was being taken to Nellore, the police conducted vehicle inspection. During the drive, four persons--Vemagiri Ravi Kumar, Md Bhashiruddin, Prathipati Satyannarayana and Mahendrati Venkateswara Rao--who were travelling in an auto-rickshaw, tried to escape. The police chased them and caught them. When they were grilled, they spilled the beans, the police said.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Oleti Aravinda Babu, the accused would be produced before the magistrate. He said the role of constables Trimalesu (Annavaram in East Godavari district), P Israel Raju and another from Guntur district, was being investigated.
