Enterprise eCOPS for streamlining administration and maintaining a database of criminals to help solve complex cases

With the launch of Enterprise eCOPS by Hyderabad Commissioner Mahendar Reddy at Amberpet Police Station on Tuesday, it is evident that the Telangana Police want to be connected to the public and also reduce manual filing of cases.

The Enterprise eCOPS will be the collection of several services for the use of both the department and citizens. The connectivity is upgraded to connect each and every police unit, from police station, circle, sub-division, district, commissionerate level and state police headquarters to national headquarters for fast and easy sharing of data about crime and criminals.

This is a part of the crime and criminal tracking network project launched by the Union government. Crime and Criminal Tracking & Network System (CCTNS) is a mission mode project under the national e-governance plan of the Government of India to be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore under the XII Five Year Plan.

Police Commissioner Mahendar Reddy said that the new software would provide efficient service delivery to the citizens and reduce crime. He added that the number of reports generated through this system would reduce the drudgery of manual record keeping at all levels.

Under CCTNS project, the existing software of eCOPS would be enhanced to ‘Enterprise eCOPS’ and integrated with the software being developed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

With the help of this software police functioning would be citizen friendly and transparent by automating the functioning of police stations. Investigating officers would have tools, technology and information to facilitate investigation of crime and detection of criminals through effective usage of IT. It would also help in tracking progress of cases at ground level and in courts and help in speedy disposals.

“There are different modules in the system which would help streamline the administration of the police department. It would also help maintain the database of criminals and their modus operanadi which would help solve complex cases within a short period,” mentioned the Commissioner.

“The database of criminals would include their operations, previous crime record, video evidence against them and their links. Each time a criminal is, caught all the above details would be uploaded. This data would help other stations to crack cases easily and the efficiency is bound to increase,” said Mahendar Reddy.

The complainant would be given an ID and password to monitor the status of his grievance. He need not visit the station often or call to enquire about the status.
