It’s green signal all the way

The distance between Ravindra Bharathi and Telugu University is only 700 metres but one has to stop at three traffic signals and has to check the incoming traffic at AR Petrol Pump. Due to this it takes at least 5 to 7 minutes to reach the destination. However, with the new traffic management system, all the signals will turn green at the same time and the distance can be reached in no time.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), in association with the traffic police, is planning to introduce this system which is akin to that in Mumbai and Bengaluru, where signals at various junctions are synchronised to ease traffic flow. This system would be integrated to the existing HTRIMS (Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System) and would be completed within three months.
A survey was jointly conducted by the corporation and traffic police along with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which supplies the equipment for HTRIMS. It was found out that signals could be synchronised up to three junctions without causing disruptions in the flow of traffic. Further studies revealed that the synchronisation holds good for three signals irrespective of the distance. It was also found that this system saves upto six minutes of time and increases the speed of traffic from 16 kmph to 36 kmph.
Sources inform that traffic cops and BEL officials are customising and preparing a software to manage signals. BEL officials are likely to take assistance from a special team of engineers who prepared the Bengaluru Traffic Management System for expediting the work. The GHMC officials will make necessary repairs to roads and junctions where this new system will be implemented.
This system will be taken up on a pilot basis in three stretches which are frequently prone to traffic jams. These include Vidyanagar to RTC X Roads, Ravindra Bharathi to Nampally and Golnaka to Ramanthapur. In the next phase, this system will be implemented at three busiest stretches from Secunderabad Railway Station to Jubilee Hills Check Post.
One way, the new mantra
Traffic in the city is a labyrinth and is utterly difficult to navigate. One has to endure a lot of difficulties to reach the destination, no matter how early you start, one is not sure of reaching the destination on time. The traffic cops have come with a new mantra – One Way. Currently one way system is being implemented from Basheerbagh to Koti. The same model will be implemented on the Karbala Maidan to Paradise stretch. The vehicles from Karbala Maidan will touch Ranigunj and MG Road to reach Paradise. The other way is from Patny to Karbela Maidan via Bata X Roads and Bible House.
A study was undertaken and it was found that the usual 20 minutes of time to cover 2.4 kilometres was reduced to a mere 6 minutes with the one way system. This system would be implemented soon.
