Visakhapatnam: Four construction workers were buried alive at a multiplex construction site on the VIP Road here on Thursday around 9.45 am as loose soil caved in. They were engaged for digging for basement pillars at Siripuram. The mishap occurred when two rod-benders and two labourers had gone down to work on a retaining wall at a depth of about 20 feet.

The deceased were identified as A Someswara Rao (28) of Kancharapalem, K Krishna (40) of Muralinagar, both from the city, J Ramu (23) of Mandasa in Srikakulam district, and Paradesi Patro (32) of Berhampur in Odisha. An eyewitness, K Siva, said 13 persons were working at the site, five of them at the accident spot. “After noticing the earth caving in, we tried to escape. Unfortunately, before we could reach a safer place, the entire loose soil came down burying my co-workers alive in just a few seconds.”

DCP (Law and Order, Zone-I) M Srinivasulu, along with a huge force, rushed to the spot and took up rescue operations, along with the Fire Brigade. He said the incident was the result of “gross negligence of the builder.”

The rescue teams retrieved three bodies within one hour. The body of Ramu was retrieved after hectic efforts. Relatives of the deceased entered into heated arguments with the police, demanding arrest of the builder and announcement of compensation.

The building plan was approved in the name of one Chandrakant and two others for a commercial complex with a cellar, sub-cellar and ground-plus-four floors. The police said the work was taken up by Sri Venkateswara Constructions, belonging to Bhanu Prakash and Sitaram. The police took two site supervisors into custody and registered a case against the builders under Section 304 (A), (causing death by negligence). Panchayat Raj Minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu and Collector N Yuvraj visited the spot. The Minister said an inquiry by the Collector had been ordered.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who was on tour to Srikakulam district, announced Rs 2 lakh each ex-gratia for next of kin of the victims. While returning to Hyderabad, he handed over the cheques to the bereaved family members at Visakhapatnam airport.
