Prime Minister and junta chief Prayut Chan-O-ChaBangkok: In a rare public apology, Prime Minister and junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha today said sorry for suggesting that tourists visiting Thailand's popular beaches might be unsafe wearing bikinis, after two Britons were brutally killed this week.

Prayut apologised for the controversial remark, which sparked international outrage and equated unattractiveness with safety for bikini-wearing tourists. The tough-talking army chief said he did not mean to cause distress and said he was sorry that his remark made people feel uneasy.

"I am sorry that my statement caused uneasiness. I affirm that I did not look down on or criticise anyone. I simply wanted to warn them to be careful at certain places and certain times," he said. Prayuth's off-the-cuff comments to government officials had triggered an uproar on social media and drew sharp criticism from all over the world.
