Hyderabad: IT and Panchayat Raj Minister K T Ramarao urged Union Rural Development Minister Nitin Gadkari to strengthen MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) in Telangana State, where nine out of the 10 districts were not only backward but drought prone. Further, he urged the Centre to enhance the number of wage days per household from 100 to 150 days in view of drought situation prevailing in the State. KTR expressed concerns of the State government in a letter written to the Union Minister on Friday. The cause of the concern of the State government stems from repeated news in media that Centre was planning to scale down MNNREGA and restrict it only to backward mandals.

A great injustice would be done to newly-formed State of Telangana if such a decision was really taken, he opined. Works related to road connectivity, desilting of tanks, construction of warehouses, soil and moisture conservation and increasing green cover in the State from 25 per cent to 33 per cent were being done under this scheme, the Minister said.
