Sutirtha BhattacharyaHyderabad: City-based Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), the country’s second largest coal producer after CIL, is gearing up to open the country’s biggest underground mine next month.

Located at Adriyala near Ramagundam and established with an investment of Rs 1,200 crore, the mine will have an annual production capacity of 2.8 million tonnes.

“Currently, trial runs are going on at the new mine. Coal production will start in a week or so. Once that happens, it will be the biggest underground coal mine in the country,” a senior SCCL official told The Hans India.

The new mine is expected to produce 1 to 1.5 million tonnes during the current fiscal, helping the coal producer achieve higher output than the targeted production for FY-15. It will definitely be a good news for thermal power plants in south India at a time when the country is facing severe coal shortages time and again. Reports indicate that nearly half of India's power plants are staring at coal shortfall with stocks lasting for a week or so.

Though SCCL’s production is just about 10 per cent of what Coal India produces annually, it has been consistently exceeding its production targets for the past several years thanks to its small size and location of its mines in only Telangana state.

Pointing out that the new mine would produce 1 to 1.5 million tonnes this fiscal, Sutirtha Bhattacharya, Chairman and Managing Director, SCCL, said: "We are the only mining company to provide more than 100 per cent of what we commit to our power customers. We also make up for others' deficits and help in lowering imports".

The company which has set a target to produce 54.5 million tonnes for the current fiscal year is looking to exceed the target and achieve 55 million tonnes by March 31, 2015. Its target for next fiscal (FY-16) is pegged at 56 million tonnes.

Most of the power plants in the country are suffering from low levels of supply from Coal India, which is struggling to raise output as rains slowed activity in some mines. It fell short of its production target of 183.9 million tonnes for April-August by 8 million tonnes. The company fears it may not be able to meet its commitment of supplying 408 million tonnes to power firms this fiscal year.
