New Delhi: Four days after the saffron alliance in Maharashtra split, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray announced that the party's only minister in the Narendra Modi government - Anant Geete - will resign. Geete holds the heavy industries portfolio.
Thackeray said the resignation will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he returns from his US tour. The announcement comes after a public prodding from his cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray.
The cousins, who had been estranged for a while, had been having frequent conversations after Sena broke up with the BJP.
But on Sunday, at an election rally, the MNS chief declared that the Sena was "sticking to" power in Delhi despite the "insult" from the BJP. Had party patriarch Bal Thackeray been alive, he would have ended the association a month ago, he said.
It is likely that Geete's resignation will be followed by Sena's pull-out from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Centre. The party, NDA's biggest constituent, has 18 members in the Lok Sabha and a pull-out will reduce the NDA's number from 336 to 318. The Sena and the BJP had been bickering for over two weeks regarding seats for the Maharashtra elections, which is to be held on October 15.
The BJP wanted 128 of the 288 seats, the Sena wanted at least 148.
