Hyderabad: The fairytale run of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stretched to the 13th straight win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium here on Monday.
Gautam Gambhir should be particularly happy because they excelled in both batting and bowling departments while the Dolphins caved in rather meekly to go home with the dubious distinction of having not won a single match in the Oppo Champions League T20-2014.
Powered by Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey, who forged the best ever third wicket partnership for the team in CLT20 history, KKR coasted ahead with a comprehensive 46-run victory in the final league of Group ‘A’.
They remained unconquered after posting 153 runs partnership. The team was in no happy situation at 34 for the loss of two wickets before the sixth over after opting to bat first. That they managed to take the score to 187 for two was an indication of the manner the duo held the act together.
As it is the match had no meaningful bearing on the semifinals composition, which was reflected in the rather poor spectator turnout.
Opening the innings with skipper Gambhir, Uthappa was at his belligerent best while striking 13 boundaries in his 55-ball essay that was worth an unbeaten 85 runs. Pandey was equally aggressive at the other end while also remaining unbeaten on 76 from 47 balls. Unlike, Uthappa, Pandey struck five massive sixes to accelerate the scoring.
Dolphins, off to a disastrous start and were reeling at a pathetic 57 for the loss of four wickets, were never in the chase with Sunil Narine sticking to his guile to remarkable levels that saw him return with yet another measly three for 33 haul. Yousuf Pathan was also successful while scalping two wickets to add to the South Africans misery in the middle. They could manage 151 for the loss of eight wickets.
KKR, which is based here, will take on Hobart Hurricanes in the first semifinal, slated to be held on Thursday. Brief scores: KKR 187/2 (R Uthappa 85no, M Pandey 76no) bt Dolphins 151 for eight (S Narine 3/33).
