Chelsea’s Oscar celebrates after scoring the first goal against Crystal Palace on Saturday.London: Chelsea maintained their five-point advantage at the head of the Premier League after goals from Oscar and Cesc Fabregas secured a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday in a game where both sides were reduced to ten men.

Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo was in devastating form for Real Madrid while Sergio Aguero’s sublimity earned Manchester City a 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Oscar's sixth minute free-kick sent Chelsea on their way and Fabregas's 51st-minute goal ensured they had a cushion to protect them from Palace's late rally that was capped by a 90th-minute reply from Fraizer Campbell.

Chelsea's victory was reward for the way they reacted after the dismissal of Cesar Azpilicueta and Palace's Damien Delaney in the space of three minutes towards the end of the first half.

Azpilicueta was sent off for an ugly lunge on Mile Jedinak in the 39th minute but a second yellow card for Delaney quickly removed the hosts' one-man advantage.

Up to that point, Palace had looked capable of forcing their way back into the game but Chelsea -- captained by John Terry for the 500th time -- responded well and showed why they have maintained an unbeaten start to their league campaign.

Aquero sparkles
Meanwhile, a virtuoso performance from Aguero was the talking point in the Manchester City-Hotspur Premier League showdown that was incident-packed at The Etihad.

For long periods of the game Tottenham worried the champions, but Aguero, described as a footballing Mozart the previous day by Tottenham's coach Mauricio Pochettino, was the difference.

He opened the scoring after 13 minutes with an angled drive past Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris before Christian Eriksen equalised almost immediately.

Aguero then thrashed home his fourth of the day from outside the area to kill of the visitors, who have now conceded 15 goals in their last three league games against City.

Ronaldo strikes
At Madrid, it was Ronaldo who cornered glory and ensured that Real Madrid will head into a big week full of confidence with a 5-0 thrashing of Levante ahead of their meetings with Liverpool and Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo stretched his fine scoring streak at club level to nine games as he opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Javier Hernandez headed home to double Madrid's lead before half-time. Madrid now lie just a point adrift of leaders Barcelona, but the Catalans can restore their four-point advantage with a win over Eibar later on Saturday.
