ERS towers to restore power during natural calamities
A separate Emergency Restoration System (ERS) wing will be set up in the State shortly to meet any eventuality in the event of calamities like Hudhud cyclone.

Visakhapatnam: A separate Emergency Restoration System (ERS) wing will be set up in the State shortly to meet any eventuality in the event of calamities like Hudhud cyclone. Informing this here on Tuesday, State Energy Secretary Ajay Jain said the ERS was intended to restore power speedily in the aftermath of natural disaster. When 400 kV towers carrying high tension lines collapsed, it would normally take 20 to 25 days to rebuild them. However, the ERS towers can be set up within 24 hours and restore power temporarily until the permanent towers were re-erected, he explained.
Throwing more details on ERS, Executive Director of Power Grid Corporation Sekhar said each set of ERS would cost about Rs 5 crore. The ERS tower would not require foundation and the base would be a four-metre box upon which the strong metallic angles would be assembled and erected, he pointed out, showing the 50-metre high ERS tower set up at Pendurthi to connect the line to Garividi. “This is the first time we have set up the ERS towers in Andhra Pradesh. As many as eight towers are coming up. One from Simhdri to Pendurthi, four towers on the Pendurthi-Garividi sector and three in Kasimkota near Anakapalle,” he said.
The ERS tower would be mounted with the support of about one dozen strong cables fixed to the ground. AP Transco CMD Vijayanand said the ERS equipment was imported from Canada and the US by the Power Grid Corporation.
