The festival of lights is eagerly awaited by people of all ages for it ushers in a lot of happiness, light, colour and the joy of bursting crackers.
It is a known fact that Diwali is a nightmare for pets. Listed below are a few tips that can ensure that your pet remains safe and sound during the festival
The festival of lights is eagerly awaited by people of all ages for it ushers in a lot of happiness, light, colour and the joy of bursting crackers. For most who own a pet, it is also a part of their family. Celebrating Diwali takes a backseat so as to ensure that the four-legged family member is kept comfortable.
Diwali is the day when most of the pets, especially dogs, are reported to be lost. There have been cases where dogs with weak hearts died due to the sound of crackers.
There are a few steps most of veterinarians prescribe to celebrate festival without causing much harm or bewilderment to pets. Senior veterinarian and surgeon Dr M Shyam Sundar said, “Dogs are highly sound sensitive and get easily distracted. On days like Diwali it is mandatory to have cotton plugged into their ears. Dogs can also be sedated. These steps may be considered to help your pets stay safe on the festival day.”
Prepare your dog to deal with sounds by exposing it to various sounds that are high in decibels than usual.
Keep the lights and television switched on. Light in the room and the sound of television will keep the pet calm. Also it is advisable to close the windows and pull the curtains over them to muffle the sounds.
Food and water for the pet should be made available and constant checking is highly advisable. It is important to make sure that a member of the family monitors the pet every five to ten minutes and allow the pet to hide somewhere if it wishes to.
Sharp objects in the room must be removed. Spraying lavender scented room freshener or lighting a fragrance candle will sooth the pet.
Earmuffs for dogs are available in the market and can be used instead of plugging cotton.
After the festival, it is absolutely necessary to clean up the post-festivity debris such as burnt crackers, etc, at places where the pet is accustomed to being.
