Tirupati: A herd of 35-40 wild elephant from the Pachhur hillocks, bordering Kuppam and Tamil Nadu in the early hours on Wednesday went berserk in a half a dozen villages, spreading over 10 kilometers.

The wild elephants trampled down crops. Crop loss was reportedly heavy. The entire Kuppam mandal remained panic stricken. The Forest officials had to struggle to prevent the tuskers from entering human habitations.

The officials organised tom-tom, advising the farmers to avoid night vigils and stay indoors and not to tease the animals. The development dampened the spirit of Deepavali celebrations.

The elephants entered Srigarapuram village in the early hours when the people were in deep sleep and went on the rampage through fields in Valur, Kosur, Krishnapuram and Jeedur villages.

In some villages, the elephants even chased the villagers and they had run for their lives. Forest guards, armed police have been deployed in vulnerable villages.

According to forest sources, the elephants crossed borders into Kuppam due to severe water scarcity and fodder shortage in their habitats.
