Hyderabad: The opposition YSR Congress Party on Friday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s urgent intervention in the ongoing issue of water release from Srisailam left bank canal to Andhra Pradesh, and also address the power crisis being faced by the Telangana State.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy said continuous power generation at the left bank project by the Telangana government to meet its ever mounting power deficit would deprive Rayalaseema of its due share of water. The immediate consequence of the reduction in water level in the project below the minimum draw down level of 854 feet would be denial to the Rayalaseema region its share of water, he said.

Another major consequence of the continued power generation by Telangana was that it resulted in release of huge quantities of water to downstream projects.

Jagan said this would lead to severe drinking water problem in Krishna delta.

The need of the hour is to stop power generation in Srisailam, the YSRCP leader said and added that the Centre should also consider sympathetically the power problem being faced by Telangana and help it tide over it. He demanded that the PM allocate 15 MU (million units) of power per day from central generation stations (CGS) to Telangana.

Alleging that both Telangana and AP states were politicising power sharing rather than find solution, Jagan urged the Union government to create a permanent mechanism to resolve the inter-state power issues on the lines of Krishna-Godavari boards.
