Dr Subodh Kandamuthan of ASCI participates in the ‘International Visitor Leadership Programme on American Think Tanks’ in the USA
Dr Subodh Kandamuthan, associate professor, Centre for Human Development, at ASCI, visited the USA for three weeks and participated in the International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) on American Think Tanks.

“The IVLP experience was a really enriching one as it provided a unique opportunity to understand the functioning of various think tanks across the USA. Since the Union government has highlighted the role of think tanks in India, it is a great opportunity for institutions like ASCI to have a better role in policy formulation in the country,” said Dr Subodh on returning back to the city.
The IVLP is a prestigious programme which takes today’s and tomorrow’s foreign leaders to the United States for firsthand exposure to their professional counterparts and US society. Participants visit US public and private sector organisations related to the project theme besides participating in social and cultural activities.
Dr Subodh was part of a six-member delegation from India. This programme provided a firsthand glimpse into how American think tanks and related university institutions are structured in the US, how they create content, how they influence national policy and finally how they find funding to sustain operations. The institutions the delegation visited include Brookings Institute, American Enterprise Institute, American Health Policy Institute, Wharton Business School at University of Pennsylvania, Clinton Global Initiative, Research Triangle Institute, University of Chapel Hill, Centre for American Experiment and Arizona State University.
“There are a lot of lessons to be learnt from the US like how the think tanks influence policy decisions which can be replicated in India. In the future, ASCI could collaborate with think tanks in US on common areas like health, education, gender, and economic development. Apart from the academic benefits, the visit also provided great firsthand experience on the culture of the different states in US, which was very fruitful,” Dr Subodh maintained.
