Baghdad: An international rights group says Islamic State militants carried out a mass killing of hundreds of Iraqi prison inmates when they seized the country's second-largest city of Mosul in June.
Human Rights Watch said that some 600 male Shiite inmates from Badoosh prison outside Mosul were forced to kneel along the edge of a nearby ravine and shot with automatic weapons. The New York-based watchdog said in a statement that the Shiite prisoners were separated from several hundred Sunnis a small number of Christians who were later set free. The statement was based on interviews with survivors.
A total of 10 Peshmerga fighters crossed the Turkish borders into Syria's predominantly Kurdish town of Kobane on Thursday morning, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The 10 fighters are the first batch to enter the city since Turkey allowed the Peshmerga to join the fight in Kobane, also known as Ayn al-Arab, against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, Xinhua reported citing the observatory.The observatory said more Peshmerga fighters were expected to cross the borders into Kobane within the next few hours.
Meanwhile, Islamic State group freed 25 Kurdish schoolchildren kidnapped by its fighters in northern Syria in May, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The 25 were the last to be freed of a group of 153 schoolchildren kidnapped by IS in northern Aleppo province on May 29, the Britain-based monitoring group said. The group of children, most aged between 13 and 15, was intercepted and taken hostage en route to their hometown of Kobane, also known as Ain al-Arab, after sitting exams in Aleppo city.In Baghdad, the bodies of 150 members of an Iraqi Sunni tribe which fought Islamic State have been found in a mass grave, security officials said on Thursday.
The US-led international coalition of more than 60 countries against the Islamic State will degrade and ultimately destroy the terror group, a top Obama Administration official has said.
"I do believe we will degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL with our coalition of over 60 countries," National Security Advisor Susan Rice said.
