All those who have been to the Kanakadurga temple, would recollect being stuck in traffic or would have found it difficult to navigate through, as the narrow road which leads to the temple, also links the Chennai-Kolkata national highway. A proposal for the construction of a flyover at the approach road to the temple was made a decade ago but it has a hardly seen the light of the day.
In the last decade, the then State government managed to procure Rs 36 crore from the Centre to widen the roads but it didn’t ease the traffic woes. It has to be noted that the then leader of opposition Chandrababu Naidu staged a dharna demanding the construction of flyover.
Post bifurcation, the State government had written to the Centre seeking clearance and funds for the construction of the flyover. Local MP Kesineni Srinivas reportedly held a series of meetings with senior officials of Union Surface Transport Ministry and the National Highways Authority of India.
Earlier an expert committee that was constituted gave three options which includes road widening, flyover from Bhavanipuram to Rajiv Gandhi Park and a flyover from Bhavanipuram to the Krishna Lanka Fire Station. Reportedly, the State government opted for flyover from Bhavanipuram to the Rajiv Gandhi Park, which is two-and-a-half kilometer long.
Kesineni Srinivas said that widening of the road was not viable owing to proximity to the river and it would delay the work as well.
“Flyover from Bhavanipuram to Krishna Lanka Fire Station would require land acquisition and also permission from the railways as the flyover has to be built across two railway bridges. This option however too was not viable. Hence the flyover would be constructed from Bhavanipuram to the Rajiv Gandhi Park,” he added.
