Guntur: A five-member team of Acharya Nagarjuna University consisting of professors has recommended relocation of the gas pipelines away from populated areas. The team, headed by Prof Sankariah, Department of Geology, visited Nagaram in East Godavari district, where a gas pipeline explosion claimed several lives and reduced property to ashes. The team’s report was submitted to NU VC on Tuesday.

The team identified several chinks in the pipeline network and failure of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Gas Authority of India (GAIL) in taking precautions to avert bursting of pipeline and loss of life.

It pointed out that ONGC and GAIL had failed to put up signboards or erect fence around the pipeline. The rule that no construction should be allowed within 500 yards of the pipeline was ignored. Many habitations sprang up in the vicinity of the pipeline. In fact, buildings and schools were constructed around it. To top it, agriculture activity was carried out in the area.

The professors stressed the need for periodic inspection of the pipeline, which may develop cracks due to corrosion under thermal stress. There would be variation of temperature at times leading to expansion and contraction of the pipeline. It may lead to the pipeline developing cracks. The team suggested to the government to prevent such calamities.
