New Delhi: Buoyed by the Assembly polls successes, a confident BJP-led government is expected to push for the passage of key economic bills, including on the insurance sector, in the winter session of Parliament beginning on Monday. The session, the first after the expansion of the council of ministers this month, will have 22 sittings and will end on December 23.
The Janata Parivar family comprising JD-U, CPI-M, BSP and SP have announced their decision to oppose the FDI hike in insurance sector. They plan to enlist the support of Congress for greater opposition unity. Congress has not been able to secure the Leader of the Opposition post as it fell short of the required 55 by 11 seats. Though the Parivar has barely 15 seats in the Lok Sabha, but have 25 seats in the Rajya Sabha, which, looking at the way numbers are balanced in the Upper House is far more significant.
The government’s ambitious shortlist includes its intention to replace two ordinances – The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Ordinance, 2014 and The Textile Undertakings (Nationalisation) Laws (Amendment and Validation) Ordinance – with Bills, and pass the long overdue Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill as well as The Constitution (119th Amendment) Bill, 2013, the latter to ratify the India-Bangladesh Land Agreement of 1974. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley earlier this week stated that as many as 39 bills may be ready for either introduction or consideration.
Nanavati Commission report on Gujarat riots, repeated incursions by Chinese Army, Naval accidents, Shiv Sena's demand for special package for drought-hit Maharashtra and AAP's demand for package for Punjab farmers are also likely to be raised.
