While most Hyderabadis remember the weekend for the breathtaking sound by Grammy winner Afrojack, there was another part of the city, not too far away, relishing some soothing music from two different parts of the world, one being our own city.

Catharsis, a four-piece city based band performed alongside Fatoumata Diawara, a Malian artist, as part of Blackberry’s Sharp Nights. They rendered a soulful vocal and instrumental recital throughout the night at Durgam Cheruvu Park. While the evening started off with a fashion exhibit by Blackberry's, whose proceedings would be given for charity, Carnatic music practitioners took to stage and set the tempo for the evening.

Members of Catharsis

Catharsis is known for its fusion of Carnatic and rock music. Combining the subtle hues of classic and rock, what came out was music that provided solace to the soul.

The crowd was immersed in the passion and energy of Milan world music star Fatoumata Diawara. Her vocals, chords of the guitar and mild dance moves were relishing.

Though Sunburn witnessed a huge crowd at Emaar Boulder Hills, the concentrated crowd at Durgam Cheruvu Park experienced quality music. Accompanied by the smoking live band, Fatoumata mesmerised the audience with her energy filled jazz and funk heading into joyous and sensual folk-rock.

Fatoumata Diawara

Catharsis has developed as a band from scratch. Producing music for short films is how they started and now the band gets to perform with big artists like Fatoutamata Diawara. Phani Teja, Vivek Sagar and Sanjay Das started jamming during weekends and just when friends insisted on forming a band and naming it, the trio named themselves as Catharsis, meaning cleansing, which is indeed what their music does. Joining the band and further strengthening it was Varun Venugopal.

To speak about the genre of music the band produces it is perhaps nothing concrete. The band’s music is a perfect commixture of pop, jazz, among others, with touch of Carnatic, making the music unique. Catharsis’ music is more instruments based and not lyric based, making it further more impressive. In the coming days, the band looks forward to make a prominent mark in the contemporary music scene.
