Hyderabad: Almost a month-and-a-half passed since Syed Mustafa, all of 11, was burnt alive allegedly by army jawans at the Mehdipatnam Garrison on October 8, still there is no breakthrough in the case.
Police seem to be more focused on the unnatural death of one of the suspects in the case Lance Naik B Appalaraju. Now with his suicide, cops are baffled and seem to be groping in the dark.
The main reason for Appalaraju becoming a suspect was a few ‘lies’ he reportedly told investigators in the initial round of questioning, sources said. Apart from Appalaraju, the investigating officials said three other army personnel were on their list of suspects. The post mortem report also suggested that there was an anal injury on Mustafa, but swabs sent to FSL confirmed that there were no traces of semen. With Appalaraju's death, police have now decided to intensify the probe. “We are yet to get the final forensic report. We will crack the case soon with the available leads,” a senior police officer of the West Zone said. Civilians represented by City Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain continue to pursue the matter with the police authorities. Mayor believes the investigation took a backseat after the Lance Naik's suicide. “The investigation is going on at a snail's pace, particularly after the suicide of the jawan,” the Mayor told to The Hans India.
“Even the transfer of Shahnawaz Qasim, DCP (E) who headed the SIT, made a dent on the investigation,” he added. Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC) team comprising of Kaneez Fathima, advocates Gulam Rabbani and Ismail Khan, D Kotesh and Gurram Seetaramulu (research scholars, English and Foreign Languages University), D Nagaraju, Sogra Begum (activists), Tathagata Sengupta (Assistant Professor, HCU), advocate Greeshma Rai and Kaveri Indira (Faculty Fellow, HCU), Arpita Kanjilal (research scholar, HCU) visited Mehdipatnam Garrison where the incident took place and spoke to boy’s relatives, locals of Siddiqinagar and even the investigating officer of the case and issued a report detailing the results.
When one of the team members asked whether there was any suspicion of sodomy, the investigating officer replied that police were looking at all angles.
“After speaking to the investigating officer, it is clear that police are not given autonomous authority to investigate this case. They are dependent completely on military personnel,” said a CLMC member. The Mayor said till now only Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia was provided to the family by the GHMC and some of the financial assistance was extended to the family by Bazm-e-Ittehad, a Jeddah-based NGO and the government's promise of giving Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia was still pending.
