Hyderabad: In a significant development, Singareni Colleries Company Limited (SCCL) is gearing up to add third unit to its 1,200 MW maiden thermal power plant which is currently under construction at Jaipur near Mancherial in Adilabad district.

Once operational, these three units will go a long way towards easing power shortage in the electricity-starved, newly-created state of Telangana.

“We expect the two units of 600 MW each which are presently under construction to be operational by November 2015. In the meantime, we are finalising plans to add a third unit of around 600 or 660 MW generation capacity at the same location,” a senior SCCL official told The Hans India. The coal miner is now busy with the task of getting a Detailed Project Report (DPR) ready for the third unit. “Once the report is ready, we will be able to finalise investment and other requirements for the new unit,” the official added.

It is said SCCL can make significant savings on the cost if it chooses the same location for the third unit also. “We have enough land there for the new unit. Besides, the water supply and rail infrastructure we are creating for the existing two units can be tapped for the third unit as well,” he explained.

The company acquired 1,300 acres of land for the Greenfield, 600 MW x 2 Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) and the construction work on the project began in May 2014, a few months after the entire contract was awarded to the public sector major BHEL. It was initially estimated that the two units would require an investment of Rs 5,685 crore, but current projections indicate the investment is likely to shoot up to Rs 7,500 crore.

Unlike the initial plans, the company is now getting ready to commission both the units around the same time in November 2015. “It was initially planned that commissioning of the second unit would be done three months after the first one. But we have now decided to commission both with a gap of one week or so,” the official said.

The SCCL roped in energy giant National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) as a consultant for the Greenfield project. However, it has not yet decided on the O&M (operations & maintenance) part of the project. “We will take a call on this once the first plant is ready for operation,” the official said, adding “All the Greenfield projects face numerous challenges. Same is the case with our project as well. We have to clear the hurdles as we move forward”.
