India Post’s circle office comes to Vijayawada

City is all set to have one more State office. The Central Government had decided in principle to create a new circle office for the Andhra Pradesh, which would be located in the city. Hitherto the regional headquarters of the India Posts headed by Post Master General, would now have the State’s headquarter headed by Chief Post Master General representing the 13 districts.
The Andhra Pradesh State has three regions, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool each headed by Post Master General. With the bifurcation and creation of a Circle office in Vijayawada, the department is likely to create two more regions in Rajahmundry and Tirupati, making it five.
The postal department, ahead of the bifurcation, had already built own office at Gandhinagar from where the Post Master General operates. This building is likely to be the State headquarters for the department, once the division is finalised.
The department had also modernised its two post offices in the city, the head post office at One Town and the Buckinghampet post office in Governorpet, making them more customer-friendly by providing more interface with the front office staff. The bulk bookings including packing and cargo delivery were also adopted, connecting the city with Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata in the north to Chennai and Bengaluru in the south, besides Hyderabad.
The Chief Post Master General, B V Sudhakar, who currently heads the department in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States, had introduced several initiatives in the department to make it more customer-friendly and face the competition from the private courier services. Sudhakar, prior to his assignment as the Chief Post Master General, took special care to develop the department as the Post Master General of Vijayawada and Kurnool regions.
As the department is the Central government establishment, the bifurcation of the employees is expected to be a smooth affair. But for the lower level staff, the senior officials would have to follow the national posting. The lower-level staff, the department had decided to take the Class X certificates to fix the nativity to be distributed to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Interestingly, the department had almost completed this exercise silently in anticipation and it would now be made known to the staff in the next couple of weeks.
