Vijayawada: Thulluru Farmers are planning to organise a “Chalo Delhi” programme sometime during the last week of December or third week of January. The farmers are planning to meet leaders of various national and regional parties and seek their support for their fight against the land pooling being undertaken the State government to build a new capital city.

The farmers of 29 villages under Thulluru, Tadepalli and Mangalagiri mandals are opposing tooth and nail the government’s proposal to take away their fertile lands for capital city.

The farmers from the villages on the right bank of the river Krishna are up in their arms against the government. Farmers raise two to three crops on the lands in these villages in any given year. Farmers have urged the government to acquire dry lands which are rain-fed.

However, the government is firm on acquiring the lands on the river front. The government has offered 1000 square yards of land per acre as compensation besides another 300 square yards of land in commercial zone. Majority of the farmer are opposed to the move and extensively campaigning against the government’s move.

Krishna Delta Parirakshana Samithi (Krishna Delta Protection Committee) has promised to extend its help to the farmers. Former Minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao is likely to accompany the farmers to Delhi.

Besides meeting the national leaders and social activists like Medha Patkar, Anna Hazare, the farmers are also planning to meet the Central Ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, if possible, and brief them on the contentious issue of land pooling and the government’s “conspiracy to snatch fertile land” and thus deprive them of their livelihood.
