Pancreatic Gland plays pivotal role in the body. The important food material will be digested by pancreatic secretions of exocrine pancreas. Endocrine pancreas controls the glucose level by producing many kinds of hormones. Problems that emerge in pancreas are manifold.
PANCREATITIS: Swelling appears in pancreatic gland in pancreatitis. This is normally due to gallbladder stones or excess drinking of alcohol. Sometimes it may be due to use of medicines or increase in cholesterol. If the problem is severe, symptoms like jaundice, increase in infections, unconsciousness are witnessed. Problems can be noticed in the initial stage itself with blood tests, serum analysis and ultrasound. If necessary ERCP test also has to be done. If disease is severe, patient has to be admitted in hospital. But mostly problems can be solved with the usage of medicines. The operation can be performed in laparoscopy method at certain times.
STONES IN PANCREAS: This may cause pain in upper abdomen which may penetrate into backbone. Pain turns severe as the problem increases. Sometimes due to genetic problems, diabetes may affect in younger age also. Swelling in pancreatic duct, and stones can be seen through ultra sound test. Sometimes, MRCC test may become imminent. Problem can be controlled through pain killers and pancreas enzyme supplements. If stones are more, they can be removed by lithotripsy and endoscopy method. If the size of the pancreatic stone is big, and pancreatic duct is more than six millimeters, permanent solution can be sought through LPJ operation.
CANCER: The third problem is cancer in pancreas. This emerges in pancreas duct on many occasions. Cancer may turn severe even devoid of any symptoms of disease, when cancer appears in the end part of pancreas gland. This cancer can be noticed in the initial stage itself through ultrasound abdomen test, or CT scan test.
Sometimes CA 19.9 blood tests, Endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP test may be necessary. There are certain myths on pancreas cancer. This cancer can be treated with modern technology. If drinking of alcohol is cosseted, treatment results will be better. Good treatment can be given if specialist doctors are consulted. Otherwise this may lead to problems like diabetes, cancer. However one should remember the golden maxim that “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”.
