Union Home Ministry directs NCRB to collect information pertaining to sudden deaths of aged people in Telangana

Hyderabad: Perhaps for the first time in the country in the recent years, Union Home Ministry has taken serious note of the spate of sudden deaths of aged people in Telangana State in the last few months. It may be recalled that after the Telangana government announced Aasara pension scheme, some of the beneficiaries, whose names did not figure in the list though they were getting pension till June, died of despair.

Reports said that in the recent drive conducted to select the new beneficiaries under the social security scheme, the names of some of the earlier beneficiaries were deleted from the list displayed at government offices in villages. Under the new scheme, the pension amount has been increased to Rs 1000 from 200 as promised by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the 2014 election manifesto.

Taking suo motu notice of the reports that appeared in the media, the Union Home Ministry instructed its national level crime data collecting agency - National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) - to collect the information pertaining to the deaths of aged people in Telangana. The data would be compiled under the category of ‘sudden deaths’.

The NCRB would gather all the statistics from State Crime Record Bureau (SCRB) which collects information from the local official bodies. NCRB Joint Director Surendra Panwar told The Hans India that the compiled data being sent by the SCRB would be published in the NCRB report 2014-15.

Sudden deaths of aged people were a concern for the country, he added. The exact number of the deceased is to be ascertained by the official bodies. The compilation of figures would be finalised only after the village-level officials certify the deaths. It may be mentioned here that National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has already slapped a notice on the Telangana government over the spate of suicides committed by debt ridden farmers since the Telangana was formed.
